Veteran Kikuyu benga musician Ken Wa Maria is among the names being fronted to serve on the board of Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital, as Nairobi County moves to strengthen governance in its Level 4 and Level 6 facilities.
Governor Johnson Sakaja’s cabinet recently approved the establishment of boards for Level 4 health facilities to fill vacancies in line with the Public Finance Management Act, 2012 and the Facilities Improvement Financing Act, 2023. The overhaul targets key institutions including Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital, with the goal of enhancing accountability and operational efficiency.
Ken Wa Maria, a University of Nairobi graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, brings a unique blend of analytical training and public influence to the table. While widely known for his decades-long music career, his academic background in statistics equips him with data-driven decision-making skills critical for hospital oversight, resource allocation, and performance monitoring.
Musically, Ken Wa Maria rose to prominence in the 1990s as one of the most prolific Kikuyu benga artists. With dozens of albums and hits like Fundamentals and Muzolex (Nzoka) he became a household name for his storytelling and social commentary. Beyond entertainment, he has used his platform for civic education and mentorship, earning respect across generations.
The county says qualified board members will ensure health institutions are better equipped to meet Nairobi’s growing population needs. If appointed, Ken Wa Maria would join efforts to professionalize management at Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital, a 350-bed Level 6 facility in Mathare North serving over 190,000 residents.
